Inside the Composites Testing Lab Behind Every Mingjin FRP Tank

Most buyers of fiber-reinforced plastic equipment do not lose sleep over the purchase order. They lose sleep over year three — when a tank wall starts to weep at a nozzle, when a pipe run sags between supports, when a tower shell de-laminates in a flue gas line. Corrosion-resistant composite equipment either holds its numbers or it does not, and the difference is decided long before the vessel leaves the yard. It is decided in the laboratory.

At Mingjin Composite Materials (Lianyungang) Co., Ltd., the laboratory is not a showroom. It is a working checkpoint that sits between incoming raw materials and finished goods, and it is the reason we can talk about wall thickness, hardness and resin behavior with numbers instead of adjectives.

A Testing Floor Built for Composite Work

Our lab is equipped to a standard we consider unusual in the civil FRP sector. The bench carries the instruments a composite really needs to be judged by: a computer-controlled electronic universal testing machine (CMT5105) and a digital electronic universal testing machine (WDW-100S) for tensile, flexural and compressive evaluation of laminate coupons; a Barcol hardness tester (934-1) for cure verification on the finished surface; an ultrasonic thickness gauge (ST130) for non-destructive wall measurement on completed vessels and pipe; and a spark tester (JC-6) for holiday detection on linings and coatings.

Resin and raw material checks run alongside mechanical testing — a heat deflection and Vicat softening point tester (HSN-WK), a rotational viscometer (NDJ-79), an analytical balance, a thermostatic water bath, a drying oven and a box resistance furnace handle thermal and viscosity behavior, while calipers, micrometers and tape measures keep dimensional checks honest. The practical output for a buyer is simple: cure state, thickness, and mechanical performance are verified before shipment rather than assumed.

From Test Bench to Winding Machine

Testing only matters if the manufacturing equipment can hold a specification repeatedly. Our shop floor runs two FW-4000 computer-controlled horizontal filament winding machines, three FRP process pipe winding machines, more than 80 sets of steel molds across pipe and tank diameters, and three FW-25000 on-site winding units.

That last item is the one international buyers ask about most. Site winding lets us fabricate the vessel where it will be installed, using both helical and hoop winding, reaching diameters up to 25 meters and volumes up to 5,000 cubic meters. The helical capability matters: many large field winding machines can only lay hoop layers, which leaves axial strength short. Combined helical and hoop construction distributes load in both directions, which is exactly what a tall tower or a wide tank shell needs.

We also brought in a continuous winding line for PP, PE and PPH covering DN1600 to DN5000. The barrel is formed in a single pass with no weld seam along the body, which lifts both consistency and throughput — a genuine advantage where thermoplastic pipe is specified instead of thermoset FRP.

What We Build

The product range is broad because the process base is broad. It covers FRP storage tanks, FRP towers and complete process packages, FRP pipes and fittings, FRP covers and gratings, FRP integrated pumps, FRP anti-corrosion linings, FRP fans, FRP cooling towers, carbon fiber composite parts, and PP, PE and PPH plastic products. Flue gas desulfurization equipment and other environmental process vessels are part of the standard offering.

These products serve chemical, power, metallurgy, brewing and municipal projects — industries where chlorides, acids, alkali service and hot wet gas punish steel and concrete and reward a properly specified composite.

Systems, People and Paperwork

Mingjin was founded in 2009 and operates from the North Zone of the Development Zone in Donghai County, Lianyungang, with expressway and national highway access on three sides — useful when oversized vessels need to move. Annual output of FRP and carbon fiber composites runs around 15,000 tons. The technical and production team numbers more than 80, including two doctoral-level and one master's-level specialist. We design and build our own winding equipment in-house, which means process problems get solved at the machine, not deferred to a supplier.

Management systems are certified to ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001. The company holds AAAA credit enterprise and contract-and-credit-honoring enterprise standing, plus a Jiangsu Province advanced unit in quality management certificate.

Service Standards Written Down, Not Implied

A dedicated Engineering Technology Center — more than 20 technical staff at bachelor level or above with intermediate or higher titles — handles customer support as a standing function. The commitments are specific:

Two-hour response to service requests. Complaint reply with a proposed solution within 24 hours. A 24-hour hotline, every day of the year. Periodic follow-up by phone or in person after commissioning. Under warranty, quality-related or misapplication faults receive an answer within 8 hours, with engineers dispatched to site as fast as travel allows. Non-warranty issues are still supported, billed at cost only.

Before that, buyers are invited to inspect production in person, receive our design and installation specifications, and have process parameters adjusted to special requirements. We train customer installation crews either at our works or on site, and we send engineers to provide free on-site technical guidance during construction — because most field failures in composite equipment trace back to poor installation, not poor laminates.

Why This Matters for Importers and Distributors

The global shift from coated steel and concrete to composite equipment is driven by lifecycle cost: no repainting cycles, no chloride attack, a fraction of the weight, and far less crane time on installation. But composite supply is uneven. A distributor's reputation rides on whether the vessel that arrives matches the datasheet that was quoted.

That is the case for buying from a plant with its own laboratory, its own winding-machine design capability, and on-site fabrication for the sizes that cannot travel by road. It is also the case for buying from a supplier that will put response times in writing.
